How a Friend Helped Me
Peter Kariuki was a schoolmate of mine at Starehe Boys' Centre where I had my high school and college education. He never got to know me during our time in the school because he was three years my senior and we didn't board in the same house.
After completing his education at Starehe, he was awarded a scholarship to pursue a post high school diploma at Deerfield Academy in Massachusetts, United States. While there, he applied to several American colleges.
He was most likely accepted by most of the colleges but chose to matriculate at the renowned Stanford University where Bill Clinton's daughter had received her Bachelor's degree a few years earlier. A lucky young man he was.
In 2006 when I was applying to four top American colleges, including Stanford, I befriended Peter Kariuki via email. I however cannot remember the advice he offered me at that time. As it happened, the colleges rejected me.
When I was again applying to four top American colleges in 2007 while I was a freshman at JKUAT where I was pursuing a degree in electronic & computer engineering, I contacted Peter Kariuki. This time, I recall him advising me to be grateful that I was in JKUAT.
I however never felt proud to be in JKUAT. My dream was to study in a First World environment where I would interact with people of other races. The dream was shattered after all the four American colleges rejected me.
Never one to give up, I applied to several top American colleges for the third time in 2009. As I worked on my applications, I requested Peter Kariuki to review my application essays. He obliged and suggested how I could improve the essays.
Apart from reviewing my essays, Peter Kariuki advised me to also apply to less competitive colleges because Stanford's standards are high. I disregarded his advice and chose to apply to Yale and Harvard which are as highly selective as Stanford, if not more. They all rejected me.
Grateful for the advice Peter Kariuki had offered me when I applied to top American colleges in a span of four years, I kept in touch with him via email and Facebook for a number of months before I offended him in those days when I was a foolish young man. I nonetheless appreciate the help he offered me.
