How to Get Your Mojo Back

Picture related to the title of the story

In his book The Mystery of God's Will, pastor Charles Swindoll discloses that there are times he has felt abandoned by God. In disclosing so, he has made me feel in good company because I also lose my mojo every now and then.

Often when I lose my mojo, I feel too bored to pursue my hobbies. I also feel guilty over some of the foolish deeds I have done and resent people who have been unkind to me. Do those experiences sound familiar to you?

If they do, and I am sure they do, I have got tips I'd like to share with you on how to get your mojo back when you lose it. The tips, which work for me, are:
  1. Going for a jog and a walk: These two exercises improve mood and outlook. They also provide social opportunities. Try them for at least forty minutes next time you lose your mojo.
  2. Reading an entertaining book or short story: This is another effective way of regaining mojo which has worked for me. One evening in 2016 for instance, I felt energized after reading the first chapter of Immaculee Ilibagiza's wonderful memoir, Left to Tell: Discovering God Amidst the Rwandan Genocide. It truly was energizing.
  3. Writing a story and sharing it on social media: I have found this to be one of the most rewarding exercises, especially when people like and comment on my stories. Try it next time you feel low; I guarantee you that it will make your day. And don't be worried by the first draft of your story; rewrite it several times and most likely, the story will look better by the time you are rewriting it like for the fourth time.
  4. Talking to a friend or family member: This has helped to elevate my spirits on several occasions when I felt down. I particularly recall an evening in 2011 when I was terribly burdened with guilt. When I met my brother Paddy, he gave me a pep talk about the Nobel prize winning economist John Nash and the mental illness he wrestled with. And wow! His talk inspired me so much that I literally bounced all the way to the hostel I was staying. Next time you are in the doldrums, try talking to a trusted friend or family member.
  5. Reflecting on past successes: I came across this advice in a document that my friend Michael Njeru sent me a couple of years ago. But I have to confess I have never tried it when feeling low in mood. Next time I lose my mojo, I'll give the advice a shot. I beseech you to also try reflecting on your past successes when you lose your mojo; it could improve your mood.
  6. Practising gratitude: This is an advice we have all heard many times. But have you noticed how gratitude seems to be on everybody's lips but in a few people's practice? Let's be different by practising gratitude each passing day as the Kenya national anthem exhorts us in its third verse.
  7. Praying: If you believe in God like I do, I recommend trying prayer power next time you lose your mojo. Pray for a solution to whatever problem that has caused you to lose your mojo. And who knows? Sooner rather than later, the peace of God that surpasses all understanding could descend on you.
  8. Listening to music: Well, I usually stay away from music when I lose my mojo. But once I begin to feel it getting back, listening to music helps speed up the process of regaining full mojo. Next time you feel low, I recommend you go for a jog and a walk, read a great book and write a story. And if those exercises improve your mood, turn to your favourite music and bingo! You will be happy again.
  9. Remembering that everyone loses mojo at times: Keeping this in mind when you feel low in spirits helps put things in perspective. Yes, we all experience moments when we feel bored, guilty or resentful.
There you have them: that is, tips on how to get your mojo back. I hope you have enjoyed going through them and gleaned something valuable. And if I have omitted a tip you think would be helpful to me and others, please don't hesitate to let me know. Adieu!

Points to Ponder

Picture related to the title of the story
This is our planet Earth, which I will talk about in the story below, as viewed from space. Photo courtesy of the National Aeronautics & Space Administration (NASA).

Whoopee! It has been raining in my home area over the last few days. Our farm, which was looking more like a desert in its brownish-yellow colour, is now turning green. If the rains continue, I expect the farm to have turned radiantly green by this day next week. And by the way, green is my favourite colour of nature.

Today, as I observed our farm begin to turn green thanks to the rains, I pondered using a line of thought I borrowed from my friend Joe Mazzella, "If God can do all these wonders of turning a dry area green, what if we allow Him into our lives? Perhaps He can make our lives more fruitful and full of peace and love."

There is a pumpkin plant growing behind my room. It sprouted by accident after someone threw a pumpkin seed there. While I wait for the plant to produce pumpkins, I have been religiously watering it everyday with the water I use to clean my room.

Over the past four weeks while observing the pumpkin plant grow in length, I have thought to myself as a wise man would think, "In our times of challenge, what if we turn to the same God who makes living things grow? Perhaps He can strengthen us, expand our vision, lift our spirits and fill us with His peace."

I agree with the Bible when it says that we are fearfully and wonderfully made. A few months ago while thinking of the wonderful construction of the human body and the workings of its various parts, it dawned on me that no other organ of the body is as tightly protected as the brain. Try to poke your forehead with your fingers and you will feel the hard skull that tightly protects the brain.

As I contemplated on how tightly protected the brain is, I thought to myself as a wise man would think, "If we could protect our minds from negative thoughts the way the skull protects the brain from external damage, perhaps we can become peaceful, loving, courageous and creative."

Today, I found myself admiring a picture of the Earth as viewed from space (see photo above). And wow! The planet looks breathtakingly beautiful in its bluish, whitish and greenish colours. It is arguably the cutest planet in the solar system.

What I find most fascinating is that the planet looks perfectly spherical when viewed from space. Not even Mt. Everest can be discerned. And mark you, Mt. Everest is the Earth's tallest mountain that only a handful of people have managed to climb to the top since Sir Edmund Hillary's triumphant ascent in 1953.

In the photo of the Earth as viewed from space, Mt. Everest is reduced to the same level as valleys. But some valleys are visible from space by virtue of their bluish or greenish colours. That reminds me of the following lines in Handel's famous oratorio, "The Messiah":
Every valley shall be exalted;
And every mountain shall be made low,
And the crooked be made straight,
And the rough places plain.
All these teaches us to be humble and repentant if we wish to be exalted from God's perspective. But if we insist on being arrogant and boastful, we shall surely be made low in heaven just like the seemingly tall Mt. Everest is made low when viewed from space.

A story is told that when the great Leonardo da Vinci began painting the Last Supper, he decided to use living models of Jesus and His twelve apostles. He first started by painting Judas Iscariot when he spotted a man whose face appeared vicious, malicious, avaricious and hypocritical. Then over the next three years, he successfully found other men who appeared like each of the other eleven apostles.

After he was through with painting the final apostle, da Vinci was lucky to spot a man whose face looked like that of Jesus in that it radiated joy, hope, love and peace. And while da Vinci was painting him as Jesus, the man asked, "Do you know who I am?"

"No, I don't know you," da Vinci replied.

"Well," the man responded, "I am the same man you painted as Judas Iscariot three years ago."

While that story is fictional, it does teach us two valuable lessons: that the appearance of our faces reflects the condition of our souls and that it is never too late to change our character.

So let us strive to become like Jesus by making our faces radiate joy, hope, peace and love. Let us strive to turn our fears into courage, our mockery into compassion, our ignorance into knowledge, our foolishness into wisdom, our idleness into moments of creativity, our anger creases into laugh lines, and our sorrows into hope of a better future on Earth and in heaven. Adieu!

Bible Quote

"Always be full of joy in the Lord; I say it again, rejoice! Let everyone see that you are unselfish and considerate in all you do... Don't worry about anything; instead pray about everything; tell God your needs and don't forget to thank Him for His answers. If you do this, you will experience God's peace, which is far more wonderful than the human mind can understand."
