A Testimony

When I wandered into All Saints' Cathedral in Nairobi one Sunday morning in April 2007, I was immediately hooked to the church because of its modern facilities and its welcoming congregation. So hooked was I that I joined the cathedral's 9.30am English service choir. The choir became more of a family to me as it gave me a wonderful sense of belonging.

I loved attending choir fellowships which we had once every month. During the fellowship sessions, some choristers would give testimonies of what God had done for them. I remember one chorister named Eng. Musebe telling us how he had been sacked from his workplace and then landed another job soon afterwards.

As for me, I never gave testimonies during those choir fellowships. Not that God didn't bless me in any way. It was just that I was way too shy to say anything to the group of choristers, some of whom were my parents' age. Furthermore, I was not that much into Christianity to give testimonies. And despite having grown as a Christian since 2007, I have never gotten into the habit of giving testimonies.

Today, I have decided to break the mold and give a testimony of how God helped me solve a technical problem I faced recently. This is what happened: About two weeks ago, I noted that I wasn't receiving emails in my inbox. And for your information, I don't use Gmail, Yahoo, Outlook or any of those other popular email providers. I have my own special email address ([email protected]) which speaks volumes of how tech-savvy I am.

After I noted emails were not arriving in my inbox, I sent a message to the technicians whose servers host my email. I did so without knowing how they would reach me since my email address was not receiving emails. When a day went by without hearing a word from the technicians, I contacted the company that hosts my domain name (thuitamaina.com), informing it that my email address was not receiving emails. The company also couldn't reach me because of the hitch in my email.

Come Monday last week, I decided to transfer my domain name to the company that hosts this blog so that I could access all my hosting services under one roof. And what I like most about the company that hosts this blog is its efficient customer care services. On transferring my domain name to the company, I notified one of its employees of the problem with my email system. The employee asked me via a chat-box on their website that I update on their servers what are called MX Records.

Guess what! When I tried to update the MX Records, I was told to wait for 5-7 business days till the domain transfer process was complete. Waiting for 5-7 business days meant I had to go for almost a week without receiving emails in my inbox. During that week, I missed reading some of the inspiring quotes and devotional articles that I subscribed to be receiving in my email daily. I also worried I could be missing feedback messages sent to me via this blog as well as updates of any donations made.

As I waited for the domain transfer process to finish, I took to heart the advice of the well-known hymn "What a Friend We Have in Jesus" which says in its second verse:
Have we trials and temptations, is there trouble anywhere?
We should never be discouraged, take it to the Lord in prayer.
So I turned to God, asking Him to grant me patience as I waited for my domain transfer process to be finished and to help me resolve the email hitch. And I really believed God would see me through that hitch as He has on all the other problems I have faced in my blogging journey.

You see, since I took up blogging as a hobby in 2013, I have faced one challenge after another. Challenges such as code not working, adverts not showing and my debit card not getting accepted while making payments. The most stressful challenge I have faced was when my blog was attacked and all my files deleted; I had to reconstruct the blog. And the same God who saw me through all those challenges is the same one I believed would help me solve the email hitch that began about two weeks ago.

Sure enough, God did assist me. He granted me patience as I waited with bated breath for the domain transfer process to finish. And guess what! Once the domain transfer process was complete, the hitch in my email resolved itself. How delighted I felt to see emails streaming into my inbox again! I believe it was the Lord's doing that the email hitch corrected itself without much action on my side.

That experience tested my patience to the utmost. It also reminded me to be more grateful for the little blessings in life - such little blessings as receiving inspiring quotes in my inbox everyday. I have therefore resolved to focus more on my blessings than on my problems as I go about my daily living. So help me God.

Jesus: the One and Only

Picture related to the title of the story
With permission, I have extracted this picture-quote from Hearthymn.com. All rights reserved worldwide.

As a passionate reader of the history of the world and that of its people, I have come to be fascinated by Jesus Christ, the young Jewish rabbi who founded the Christian faith. How is it that He never strove for fame and beauty yet He attained them? How is it that He has remained famous while other heroes have faded into obscurity? And why are some people in today's world very zealous about Him?

I have known Jesus ever since I was a small boy growing up in the '90s, in the old days of landline telephone booths. That was many years before I heard of the Beatles - a music band that was popular in the 1960s and that once claimed it was more famous than Jesus.

Of course I got to know Jesus from the lessons I received about Him in church and at school. I remember one primary school teacher named Mrs. Gichiriri telling us during a pastoral lesson that every time we sin, we inflict Jesus with the same pain He felt while He was being crucified on a tree. Where Mrs. Gichiriri got that fact from, I don't know since I have not read it in the Bible.

Back in the '90s when I was a boy, there was a time my kid brother Symo heard me utter the name "Jesus!" as an exclamation. After he castigated me for exclaiming the name "Jesus", I told him the Bible only warns us not to use the name of God in vain and not that of Jesus.

"Do you have to be told?" Symo quickly countered in Kikuyu, his point being that we don't need to be instructed not to use the name of Jesus in vain.

When Symo posed that question to me, I felt deep in my bones that he had a point. So since then, I have never misused the name of Jesus. That was one hell of a great lesson that I learnt at an early age.

Probably as a result of the teachings I received in church and at school, I came to be interested in the persona of Jesus Christ as years rolled on. When I was in Form 2 at Starehe Boys' Centre, I once asked a housemate of mine called Rono how people of today came to know how Jesus looked like yet He lived in an age before cameras were invented. Without pausing to think, Rono said that some folks must have selected the face of a handsome man to represent Jesus.

Even though I was never a fervent Christian during my years at Starehe, I was deeply moved by some of the Christian hymns we sang in the school. When I was in Form 1 in 2002 for instance, I loved the old Negro spiritual "Were You There When They Crucified My Lord?" which we sang during that year's inter-house music competition. So much did I love the Negro spiritual that I would croon it while doing my chores at home.

Then in 2004 when I was in Form 3, I equally loved "I Hear Thy Welcome Voice" - the set piece for that year's inter-house music competition. I found that old hymn so tuneful and wonderful that I suggested to my music classmates that we present it for a certain music competition we were invited to in September or October 2005. The classmates agreed to my suggestion.

But it wasn't until I joined All Saints' Cathedral in Nairobi in April 2007 that I became serious in my Christian faith - serious in the sense of praying, studying the Bible and meditating on its message. I just had to become a serious Christian because the churchmates I interacted with in the cathedral required I accept Jesus for me to sing in the choir and play the organ.

That I enrolled for an evangelism course in 2008 at the cathedral shows how serious I became in my Christian faith. The course entailed praying, reading the Scriptures and giving testimonies of what God had done for us. I will never forget the Saturday afternoon when one of my evangelism teachers sat me down after a lesson and lectured me on how Jesus could impact my life and give me a clear mind. She must have noted how confused I was.

Although I have messed up on numerous occasions since 2008, I have never forsaken my Christian faith. I have kept studying the Word and repenting my sins. And I must say I have found comfort in the teachings of Jesus Christ; they are like a shade-giving tree on a hot summer afternoon.

Isn't it wonderful to learn from Jesus that God will fulfill all our needs? That we shouldn't worry about tomorrow? And that knowing the truth will set us free?

After studying the Word of God, I can now honestly say I have matured as a Christian. I have befriended Jesus, the legend in whom I confide all that I go through in my day-to-day living. And because Jesus is my friend, you can call me a Christian. But I am a different kind of Christian - one who loves human beings of all backgrounds, who doesn't meddle with other people's affairs and who respects the beliefs of others, be they Muslims, Buddhists or atheists.

I will keep growing as a Christian till the day I will be reunited with my Maker. What a joy it shall be to be with Jesus in heaven, a place without tears and sorrows!

Bible Quote

"Always be full of joy in the Lord; I say it again, rejoice! Let everyone see that you are unselfish and considerate in all you do... Don't worry about anything; instead pray about everything; tell God your needs and don't forget to thank Him for His answers. If you do this, you will experience God's peace, which is far more wonderful than the human mind can understand."
