Here's me holding Joel Osteen's Become a Better You.

If I may borrow the words of Jane Austen, Joel Osteen preaches extremely well, with great propriety, and in a very impressive manner, and at the same time without any theatrical grimace or violence. He is, in short, my favorite preacher.

I first heard him preach in 2008 but it wasn't until 2011 that his sermons began to touch me. In addition to learning new lessons on Christian faith, I enjoyed his jokes. He has a good sense of humor that he exploits when giving his sermons.

Several months ago, I developed a burning desire to re-read his "Become a Better You", a book I read in 2010 when a lady lent it to me. I thought it could help me ward off the hate, guilt and worry that assail me every now and then.

Because the book wasn't available in the bookshops I visited, I wanted to order it from Amazon but found the shipping and handling costs prohibitive. As luck would have it, I saw it on sale the other week at a bookstall in Nairobi.

Of course I bought and re-read the book. It turned out to be an encouraging read. And I wondered whether I'm the same person who read it in 2010 because it's like I missed much of its wisdom then.

My takeaways? Entrust God with every detail of my life, get rid of the accusing voices in my head, pray with an attitude of expectancy, embrace where I'm and not mind what my critics are saying.

In his book The Science of Getting Rich, Wallace D. Wattles said, "Whatever may be said in praise of poverty, the fact remains that it is not possible to live a really complete or successful life unless one is rich."

Having experienced the thrill of buying new shoes, books and smartphones, I agree with Wallace that it's not possible to live a really complete and successful life unless one is rich. That's why I want to get rich.

It seems people out there also want to get rich because some build rental houses and others buy shares in the stock market. And there are those who try their luck in lotteries.

Essential as money is, it's unwise of us to lose sight of what matters as we chase it. Two things that matter are relationships and using our talents. In fact, they are the things that make for a happy life.

So I'm thinking the best way to get rich is using our talents in work that contributes to the well-being of others. Booker T. Washington expressed what I've in mind so well when he said:
...in his effort to withstand temptation, to economize, to exercise thrift, to disregard the superficial for the real - the shadow for the substance; to be great yet small, in his effort to be patient in the laying of a firm foundation; to so grow in skill and knowledge that he shall place his services in demand by reason of his intrinsic and superior worth. This is the key that unlocks every door of opportunity, and all others fail.
The Bible seems to have a similar view on getting rich because it says something about talents and hard work. I will therefore keep growing in skill and knowledge so that I place my services in demand by reason of my intrinsic and superior worth.
