An Unexpected Education

A True Story

When I was leaving the institute division of Starehe Boys' Centre in April 2007, I wanted to start a business, own a classy ride, and become a millionaire in my twenties. And I was only 19 then.

It's like I was confused because I also wanted to fly to America and get a degree from MIT or an Ivy League college like Harvard. I even increased my word power every now and then in preparation for the SAT exam.

Then one Sunday morning, I walked into All Saints' Cathedral. And wow! The warm reception I received there made me like the church, especially its 9:30 a.m. English service choir, which I joined.

I learnt some wonderful hymns in the choir, like "Father Hear the Prayers We Offer" and "Lead Us, Heavenly Father, Lead Us". And singing them made me a better person. Even my friend, Stephen Ndambuki, saw some light in me.

But I felt shy when talking to my fellow choristers at the cathedral, especially the ladies working with big firms like HP and Citibank. And I now realize it was because I was a hick from Masaailand.

So I didn't have the mettle to become a millionaire in my twenties. And I think that's why the American colleges I applied to rejected me. They could tell I was a poor fit from the applications I sent.

Looking back, I thank God I went to All Saints' Cathedral and joined its 9:30 a.m. English service choir. In all honesty, the choir gave me an Ivy League education, what with the wonderful hymns I learnt and the godly friends I made there.

Unlike my brother Paddy, I wasn't that bright in school, and I don't know why because I studied more than he did. But I had other virtues that more than adequately compensated for my lack of academic prowess.

One was tenacity. I, for instance, read big books like Bill Clinton's memoir. And I've kept churning out stories over the years. Honestly, why did the people who compared me to Paddy not realize I was that unique?

Oh, I get it! It's because I'm a late bloomer. And there's nothing wrong with that because, as Sharon Olds observed, to ever bloom at all is very lucky. Some seeds just take a little longer to find light but stay in season forever when they do.
