I think God came up with the 8th Commandment (Thou shalt not steal) so that people would be rewarded for their efforts. To clarify my point, let's picture a farmer who decides to plant pawpaws on his farm.

He tills the farm, buys pawpaw seedlings and plants them. As they grow, he weeds, manures and waters the farm. And when pawpaw fruits appear and ripen, a man slips into the farm and plucks some.

What has the man done? Of course he has stolen the pawpaws, failing to reward the farmer for his efforts.

Gosh! I can't believe I used to do such things before I started changing my ways in 2016. When I was at JKUAT in 2008 for instance, I began taking books from the library without checking them out and went unnoticed for quite some time.

But one afternoon in 2009, an alarm went off as I was walking out of the library. Mamma mia, I had finally been caught! Luckily, the librarians sympathized with me when they heard I had been admitted at JKUAT Hospital.

I seem not to have learnt a lesson from that experience because one day in 2010 when I was taking a walk in my neighbourhood, I saw guavas on a neighbor's farm and began helping myself to several till a small boy caught me in the act a few days or so later.

But the worst theft I committed was plagiarizing other people's writings. How I wish the people who read the stories I shared before 2016 would know they were products of plagiarism!

And yes, plagiarism is a form of theft. Roget's Thesaurus classifies it under stealing together with burglary, poaching, pirating and cattle-rustling. So I was like a cattle-rustler.

Have you ever greeted someone on the streets, only to realize it's a stranger and not the friend you thought they were? It used to happen to me when I was a boy as I walked in Kiserian Town.

That probably happened because some people resemble one another. You may, for instance, find a certain celeb smiles like a former classmate, or a workmate looks like someone who bullied you in school.

By the way, it's not only people who resemble one another but also places. The hills in Hollywood, for instance, look like the Ngong Hills I see here in Kiserian. Not that I've been to Hollywood!

Have you ever sent a message, only to realize you sent it to the wrong person? And that can be embarrassing if the message is inappropriate to the person you've sent it to.

Imagine I did such a mistake when I was applying to Cornell in 2006. I mailed some application materials to Cornell University in New York and others to Cornell College in Iowa.
