A Mind-Changing Read

I had heard about the greatness of James Allen's book, As a Man Thinketh, over the past decade. My friends Bavin Ondieki and Waweru Muchai had recommended it to me. And in my readings, I had come across renowned authors like John C. Maxwell and Stephen R. Covey, who credited the book with deeply influencing their lives.

So when I went to Nairobi last Wednesday, I asked one bookseller if he had the book in his stall. He had it, but imagine he was selling it at KSh 500 even though it's a small book. I bargained to buy it at KSh 300 or less, arguing that it didn't make sense to buy it at the same price as other much bigger books in his stall, which was on a busy street.

When he stubbornly stuck to his price, I stopped arguing with him and bought the book since I thought it would be a valuable addition to my home library. (You see, my beloved reader, sometimes it's wise to consider the value of something instead of dwelling solely on its price.) The following day, I began reading it at around 10:20 a.m.

And wow! I found it so inspiring, so enlightening, so educative that I was disappointed to finish it at around 3 p.m. because I wanted the pleasure of my reading to go on and on through the sunny afternoon and well into the evening. As Proverbs 23:7 reminds us, "As a man thinketh in his heart, so is he"—a timeless truth well worth every single shilling.
