Last Sunday, at around 7:00 p.m., I talked with a music producer called Sylvester Otieno on phone to confirm if we would meet the following day to record my song as we had agreed. Soon after he confirmed my appointment with him was still on, I ended the call.

No sooner had I ended the call than Dad knocked on my door and told me Mum had an important question for me. She then asked me whether I get paid for the songs I go to produce before suggesting that a senior member of my family accompanies me to the music studio so that I'm not exploited.

While I appreciated Mum's concern, I didn't know what to tell her. I could have told her I share my songs on this monetized blog and earn money depending on the number of visitors I receive. But since she doesn't know a thing about the internet, I just told her I earn money but very little at the moment.

My reply seemed to have soothed her given the way she went quiet. But her concern disturbed me as it brought back memories of the times I had been exploited. Anyway, it's nice to have Mum around.

Here's me holding a teen health book.

"Teen Health" is a colorful book that taught me quite a lot when I read it recently, even though I'm no longer a teen. Okay, let me tell you some of the lessons I learnt.

First is that health is a combination of physical, mental and social well-being. When we are mentally healthy, we like who are and express our emotions in a healthy way. And when we are socially healthy, we get along well with others.

Second is that we should practice good health habits to lessen our chances of getting ill. Habits like choosing the right foods, avoiding tobacco, alcohol and drugs, taking part in an exercise program and learning ways of handling stress.

Third is practising responsibility like doing something without waiting to be told, following through on things we promise to do, showing up on time and finishing tasks we start and cleaning up after ourselves.

Fourth is that studies show smiling protects and promotes health, helps us recover more quickly from illness and even from surgery, and makes us cope with pressures like getting along with friends.

Fifth is that everyone has ups and downs. So being healthy doesn't mean we always feel on top of the world, but rather we have ways of bouncing back when we feel low.

Sixth is that being fit helps us feel at ease with ourselves, gives us more energy, helps us keep our weight down, prepares us for the ups and downs of life, and increases our chances of succeeding in whatever tasks we take on.
