From Shop to Spotlight

This is my friend Paul Muhia.

I've known Muhia since he was a small boy in the '90s. His mother ran a modest shop near my home, and he sometimes served me when I went to buy something from that shop. But we seldom chatted, if ever.

It wasn't until 2013 that I got to know him as a humble and laid-back lad when we became friends. During one church service we had, I noted he remained standing as other congregants went to the altar to tithe.

When he sought my advice as he was making his degree choices that year, I advised him to consider the location of the university he wanted to attend, what with travelling costs and opportunities for part-time jobs.

Not long afterwards, we drifted apart. I actually don't think we have ever met because they closed down their shop and moved elsewhere. But something about him surprised me last Friday morning.

I was reading the paper when I saw him in a full-page ad for an entrepreneurship competition, having emerged a winner. That he appeared in the paper despite his laid-back nature is what surprised me.

He is now a shining example of how determination when combined with education can help one overcome the odds. Hoping he will never forget his humble beginnings, I wish him more success in his future endeavors.

I once thought all I had to do to have a song played on the radio was produce it - and bingo! - radio stations would compete to have my song played over their airwaves. And sooner rather than later, I'd become rich and famous.

So when I produced my first song in 2015, I was over the moon, especially when some friends said the song was nice when I shared it on the net. One even said it could become a hit.

Encouraged by such feedback, I burnt the song onto several CDs. Then I spent a whole day visiting various radio stations in Nairobi to submit the CDs. Visiting the radio stations was tiring but satisfying.

But several months went by without hearing my song on air. Turns out having a song played on the radio isn't as easy as I thought. My friend Innocent Shimenga had it right when he said, "Hard work pays. Keep pushing; it doesn't come easy."
