Back in 2006 when I was interested in forming a clear mental picture of world history, I came across Bill Bryson's "A Short History of Nearly Everything" here at home. My brother Paddy had bought the book when he was doing a gap year internship in Australia the previous year. As you can imagine, I began poring over it almost immediately.
Still interested in mastering world history, I pored over the book again in 2011. Sometimes funny, sometimes enlightening, it read like a who's who of the science world. And some interesting facts I gleaned from it convinced me beyond doubt that each person matters. Okay, let me state my case.
According to Bill Bryson, to be alive in the 21st century and smart enough to know it is no joke. Each of us is a product of a long series of evolution and reproduction that began 3.8 billion years ago, from single-cell animals to the civilized people we are today. The fact that we are here means none of our ancestors died before having a child that continued the reproduction process which eventually made us.
If I may digress a bit, we are not going to stay here on Earth forever because, sorry to say, death awaits us all. According to the gospel of St. John, the godly ones among us will reign with Christ in heaven forever. I go along with St. John.
Coming back to the facts in Bill Bryson's book that convinced me everybody matters, each of us is made up of very small atoms which are themselves not alive. In fact, the atoms that make us don't know we are alive. They are mindless particles that will make other things after we die.
Interestingly, the same atoms that make us are the same atoms that fail to make life on the other planets of the solar system and perhaps even beyond. That's, of course, the miracle of life that makes me believe in the Bible.
Also interesting to note is that 99.99% of all species that have ever lived on Earth are now extinct. We are therefore living on a planet that is good at sustaining life but even better at ending it.
Indeed, to be alive in the 21st century and smart enough to know it is no joke. That's why I am convinced each person matters. So, as long as we are walking in obedience to God's Word, let us believe in our dreams, in our abilities and in own unique way of thinking.
With permission, I have extracted this picture from StockSnap. All rights reserved worldwide. I have admired Isaac Newton ever since I was in high school. When I opened my first email account in December 2004 with the then popular Yahoo Inc., I used his name as my password.
And I don't know why I admired Newton because math and physics, the fields he excelled in, were not my cup of tea. Maybe it was because his name was frequently mentioned when we were learning about force, light, motion and gravity.
Later on in 2007 when I was pursuing engineering at JKUAT, I gathered it was Newton who invented calculus, a branch of mathematics without which computers, smartphones and spacecrafts would not have been developed.
Perhaps wanting to be as inventive as Newton, I spent a lot of time in the fields, reading and reflecting, when I was a second-year student at JKUAT in 2008. One casual laborer warned me that the fields had snakes.
Not heeding the laborer's warning, I continued hanging out in the fields, even spending a whole night during which I remember, but only dimly, gazing at the same moon that Newton had observed and studied a few centuries before. Luckily for me, no snake bit me.
Newton remains one of my heroes, though I don't think I will ever excel in math and physics. After all, God places us in different environments and gives each of us unique talents and opportunities. So I will strive to use my inventiveness to excel as a blogger.

"Always be full of joy in the Lord; I say it again, rejoice! Let everyone see that you are unselfish and considerate in all you do... Don't worry about anything; instead pray about everything; tell God your needs and don't forget to thank Him for His answers. If you do this, you will experience God's peace, which is far more wonderful than the human mind can understand."

Just for Laughs
There was this drunkard named Azoge who loved drinking at Josiah's Bar. On being told a certain Hon. Nanga was flying to America to be conferred a law degree so that he could be admitted to the bar, Azoge replied, "Why fly all the way to America to be admitted to the bar while you can get into Josiah's Bar any time?"

Author's Note
I am learning to treat life as a journey, not a destination; I have therefore given up the things that weighed me down and I am now living my life to the fullest because the tomorrow I had always hoped to live my dreams may never be mine.

My Supreme Desire
To borrow the words of Elbert Hubbard, my supreme desire is to radiate health, cheerfulness, calm courage and goodwill. I wish to live without fear, hate, guilt, worry and jealousy; to be honest, natural, confident, clean in mind and body - ready to say "I do not know" if it be so; to treat all men with kindness; and to meet any loss, failure, criticism and rejection unabashed and unafraid.

Making Peace With the Past
"Dwell not on your past. Use it to illustrate a point, then leave it behind. Nothing really matters except what you do now in this instant of time. From this moment onwards you can be an entirely different person, filled with love and understanding, ready with an outstretched hand, uplifted and positive in every thought and deed."

You Matter
"Always be yourself. Never try to hide who you are. The only shame is to have shame. Always stand up for what you believe in. Always question what other people tell you. Never regret the past; it's a waste of time. There's a reason for everything. Every mistake, every moment of weakness, every terrible thing that has happened to you, grow from it. The only way you can ever get the respect of others is when you show them that you respect yourself and most importantly, do your thing and never apologize for being you."

Keys to Success
"...in his effort to withstand temptation, to economize, to exercise thrift, to disregard the superficial for the real - the shadow for the substance; to be great yet small, in his effort to be patient in the laying of a firm foundation; to so grow in skill and knowledge that he shall place his services in demand by reason of his intrinsic and superior worth. This is the key that unlocks every door of opportunity, and all others fail."

Benefits of Optimism
"In terms of success, optimistic people out perform their pessimistic colleagues. Research shows that they are consistently promoted higher and make more money while working fewer hours than those who think pessimistically. Optimists also contribute more significantly to social progress. It is the optimists who start and run successful companies, who win elections and carry out reforms, and who make breakthroughs in the realms of science and technology."

Demonstrating His Love
"Take your communication for instance - the way you address others. It ought to be with loving, gracious and edifying words. Never talk people down. Never use words that hurt and demean people. Communicate excellently with others without destroying their self-image or making them feel sorry for themselves. Talk to people in a way that they never forget the excellence of your words, the love and grace of Christ that you communicated. It's how God wants us to love."
