A lass called Deb [not her real name] has fancied me since December 2005, a month after I finished high school. She gave me a jumper one evening that December, and I noted how closely she watched me as I put it on. I fled the scene.

One evening in 2011 when I went to her home, I found her with a little child and sat down in their living room, obviously after she offered me a seat. Before long, she was telling me some things about sexual attraction, a conversation that made her randy. I resisted her advances.

Though Deb has not been my kind of girl, I used to drop by her shop in Kiserian Town where we talked about - yes, you guessed it right - sex. I found her conversations exciting in an immoral way.

When we bumped into each other one evening in 2013, she asked me to walk her home. I gave in to her request and my goodness! She asked me to fondle her breasts and carry her in my arms as we ambled along lonely paths.

Had I yielded to the temptations, we would certainly have reached the point of no return and dived into one of the surrounding bushes for an affair. And who knows? She could now be pestering me to help her take care of a child I wasn't ready to bring up.

How I Ended Up at All Saints' Cathedral

These are choristers of All Saints' Cathedral Nairobi.

When we were in Starehe Institute, my schoolmate Moses Aran went to All Saints' Cathedral Nairobi with a school trumpet. He later told me congregants there gave him a round of applause for playing the trumpet in a service.

Not long afterwards when I wanted to join a church in Nairobi to play the piano during my university years, I thought of going to the cathedral. So one Saturday night around April 2007, I asked Aran where it is.

"It's next to Uhuru Park," he replied, a tad too lightly.

Armed with that direction, I set off for the cathedral the following morning. I reached Uhuru Park, located the cathedral, entered it and sat through one service. After it was over, I approached the organist who didn't show much interest in me.

Undeterred, I attended the service that followed. After it was over, I again approached the organist.

Wow! This time, the organist was an amiable man called Dr. Imbugi Luvai. When I told him I had piano skills, he went out of his way to introduce me to the cathedral's 9:30 a.m. English service choir which I joined.

Two or three Sundays later, he allowed me to accompany the choir as it sang one hymn, most likely the majestic "I Will Sing the Wondrous Story". I played it well, which was nothing new to me as I had played hymns on many occasions at Starehe.

But guess what! Some choristers were surprised to see me play the organ so well. They looked at me with wonder as if I had announced a cure for some major disease.

Not surprisingly, the cathedral became my second home. I loved going there to sing hymns, or, more precisely, to be with the choristers. My goodness, didn't they sing beautiful hymns!
