With permission, I've extracted this picture-quote from Meme. All rights reserved worldwide.

First was "I'm not big; you are the one who is small." that I saw on a T-shirt my big neighbor Likam wearing.

Second was "Air Force One" that I saw on a tuk-tuk windshield. If you didn't know, Air Force One is the jet that the U.S. President flies in.

Third was "I was not born in Africa; Africa was born in me." that I saw on a T-shirt a young woman wearing.

Fourth was "Laugh at mine; yours will be resisted." that I saw on a bus in front of us as I was going somewhere in Nairobi.

Fifth was this one I saw in a barbershop: "Uliza ujibiwe; uliza ujinga utusiwe. (Ask and you'll be answered; ask a silly question and you'll be insulted.)"

My Naru-Moru Days

This was my classmate Maxwell Karasha and I posing for a photo during a class tour to Nairobi City when we were in Naru-Moru Primary School. I'm on the right.

Not far from home, Naru-Moru is where I began my formal education in 1993. I stayed there till the year 2000 when I was in Standard 7. And how the school looked like in my time is still intact in my memory.

It had no electricity or piped water. Neither did it have a fence, making it easy for latecomers to dodge teachers on duty. And some teachers, I must tell you, never spared the rod.

One of them was Miss Kaloki, if I remember her name correctly. Whenever she heard my Standard 4 class make noise, she would storm in and command us, "Toeni hizo magunia! (Remove those sacks!)"

By sacks, she meant our sweaters. She would then go round the classroom caning us on the back.

Then there was Mr. Wanjohi who taught math and science. His stern demeanour made some pupils tremble like weeds on a windy day when he entered a classroom. But he liked my brother Paddy who now has a medical degree and an MBA.

When he was my science teacher in Standard 7, he once taught us English in Kikuyu by telling us if we wanted to remember how the word "tongue" is spelt, we should pronounce it as "to ngu e". In Kikuyu, "to ngu e" means "I can die!"

And then there was Mrs. Waguchu. Strict though she was, she said something positive about me that I've never forgotten. Guess what? That I would grow up to be a great man some day.

Now that I'm a grown-up, I'm trying to live up to her expectations. I still meet her by the way. Several years ago when her son was seriously ill, she asked me for the phone number of Paddy who, as I've said, has a medical degree.
