H. Jackson Brown Jr.'s Life's Little Instruction Book is a collection of 1,560 instructions on how to lead a fruitful life. Jackson originally wrote the instructions for his college-bound son. I think he decided to publish them in a book after he figured out he could make a fortune by doing so. Or maybe he earnestly desired to inspire young people with his wisdom.

If Jackson's motive for publishing the instructions in a book was to inspire young people, then he achieved his aim. Boy, didn't the book inspire me when I read it in December 2015!

The instructions in the book encompass all the important areas of a human life: thinking, reading, praying, living with integrity, having a successful marriage, bringing up children and interacting with our fellow human beings. Let me briefly share with you, my beloved reader, what the instructions say on those areas.

On thinking, Jackson tells us that our minds can only hold one thought at a time; we should therefore make every thought positive and constructive. Aware of the toxic people in this world, he urges us to protect our enthusiasm from the negativity of others.

On reading, Jackson beseeches us to read more books and watch less TV, adding that the more we know, the less we fear. He also advises us to study the Bible, re-read our favorite books and lend only those books we never care to see again.

On praying, Jackson tells us to believe in the power of prayer and places particular emphasis on praying for wisdom and courage.

On living with integrity, Jackson urges us to never compromise our integrity or work for people of questionable character. He advises us to lead such a life that when our children think of fairness, caring and integrity, they think about us.

On having a successful marriage, Jackson cautions us to never marry someone in the hope that they'll change later. He advises us to marry only for love. And we should marry someone we enjoy talking to and who likes music.

On bringing up children, Jackson tells us to start saving for our children's education as soon as we get married. He advises us to be good role models for our children, to create in them a positive self-image, to never compare them with their siblings and to not make finishing everything on their plate an issue.

On interacting with our fellow human beings, Jackson exhorts us to be forgiving of ourselves and others and to never lose our anger or allow anyone to intimidate us. And he enlightens us that 80% of success in any job depends on our ability to deal with people.

H. Jackson Brown Jr.'s Life's Little Instruction Book is indeed an inspiring read. I recommend it to all young people trying to establish themselves in the world. And if I ever get lucky to have kids, the book will certainly be my gift to my children when they turn 18.

Noticing the Little Things

With permission, I have extracted this picture-quote from Meme. All rights reserved worldwide.

During my daily walks to my hometown of Kiserian, I sometimes meet friends who are too absent-minded to notice me. I don't know what goes on in their minds that makes them lost to this world. Maybe they mull over the problems they are facing or worrying about the future.

Two or three Sundays ago, I spotted my friend Timo approaching in the opposite direction. He was sauntering with his head looking down as if he was searching for a lost coin, a demeanor I thought pathetic. But I didn't take him to task over it when we met. I just greeted him and continued with my walk to Kiserian.

As for me, I often make an effort to walk with my chin up while wearing a cheerful face. I also try to notice the little things along the way. Today, let me tell you about some interesting writings I have observed over the last six years during my walks and travels.

******
A couple of years ago, I met my neighbour Likam who is tall and somehow huge. He was wearing a T-shirt that said, "I am not big; you are the one who is small."

That writing on Likam's T-shirt amused me. I had to tell his son about it a few weeks later.

******
While heading home a couple of years, I saw a tuktuk with the words "Air Force One" written at the top of its windshield. If you don't know, Air Force One is the jet that the President of the United States flies in. So you can imagine the kind of swagger the owner of the tuktuk was trying to project by calling it "Air Force One".

******
A few months ago, I passed by a damsel wearing a T-shirt that said, "I was not born in Africa; Africa was born in me." The T-shirt gave one the impression that she was proud of her African roots but she probably bought it without minding its words.

******
Several weeks ago, I saw a young man wearing a T-shirt that said, "Hey! I am good." What a cool way of telling the world he was a nice guy!

******
About three weeks ago as I was riding in a bus, I saw the following writing on the bus in front of us: "Laugh at mine; yours will be resisted."

That writing aptly captures what we should tell those who mock or belittle our efforts, doesn't it?

******
Two or three days ago, I saw a young man wearing a pullover written "Satan" on it. Were it me wearing such a pullover, I would have been worried sick about people thinking I am a devil-worshipper. But the young man seemed indifferent to the image he was projecting. Maybe he just bought the pullover to keep him warm.

******
I have noted how frequently I meet people on the streets wearing sweaters and shirts with names of American cities, states and universities printed on them. Names such as Cleveland, Virginia and Harvard. Not clearly understanding why locals seemed obsessed with such names, I am thinking it's because of the way people idealize America due to its prosperity.

******
Not all writings I have observed during my walks and travels are hilarious. Some have been inspirational.

A month or two ago for instance, I saw a guy with a T-shirt that said, "Believe there is some good in the world."

Then a few weeks ago, I saw another guy wearing a T-shirt that said, "We rise by lifting others up."

And then three weeks ago, I found myself in a bus with a sticker that had this quote printed on it: "In every desert of calamity, God has an oasis of comfort."

Bible Quote

"Always be full of joy in the Lord; I say it again, rejoice! Let everyone see that you are unselfish and considerate in all you do... Don't worry about anything; instead pray about everything; tell God your needs and don't forget to thank Him for His answers. If you do this, you will experience God's peace, which is far more wonderful than the human mind can understand."

There was this drunkard named Azoge who loved drinking at Josiah's Bar. On being told a certain Hon. I am learning to treat life as a journey, not a destination; I have therefore given up the things that weighed me down and I am now living my life to the fullest because the tomorrow I had always hoped to live my dreams may never be mine.

To borrow the words of Elbert Hubbard, my supreme desire is to radiate health, cheerfulness, calm courage and goodwill. I wish to live without fear, hate, guilt, worry and jealousy; to be honest, natural, confident, clean in mind and body - ready to say "I do not know" if it be so; to treat all men with kindness; and to meet any loss, failure, criticism and rejection unabashed and unafraid.
