The HIV Scare of the '90s

Discovered in America in 1981, HIV spread around the world like wildfire. People dying of AIDS, the disease the virus causes, looked scrawny in the pics I saw. Woe to you if you caught the virus in the '90s when there were no ARVs.

Even our government was alarmed. In 1990, President Moi declared HIV/AIDS a national disaster. Billboards were erected along major roads to raise awareness of the disease. And health workers visited schools, showing students films.

Years later, I gathered that both the U.S. Republican and Democratic parties had AIDS sufferers speak at their conventions during the 1992 presidential race to show their presidential candidates were serious about tackling the pandemic.

Glow of Hard Work

When I was trying to become a hard-working blogger a few years ago, I'd underline every sentence about work in the books I read. I even highlighted the word "work" in my Oxford dictionary, and its meaning as well.

And I admire people who work. Last Sunday when I went for my evening walk, for instance, I stopped to see a bevy of workers construct a building in Kiserian Town. It was a Sunday evening, remember, and they were as busy as bees.

Then on Tuesday last week, I woke up and found our house without electricity. So I couldn't use my laptop to work on the blog story I had planned to share that day. (The laptop battery conked out two years ago.)

Because I used my smartphone to type, edit and share the story, I became worried it wouldn't have enough charge for checking my social media accounts in the evening if the power outage persisted.

You can therefore imagine my delight when I saw a bulb light up at around 12:30 p.m. that Tuesday. It made me appreciate the work people at Kenya Power do to ensure we have our share of electricity. I will keep working hard as well.
