In the institute division of Starehe Boys' Centre, 2006.

When I heard of a college called Computronics Training Centre during my fourth-form year at Starehe in 2005, I wrote the following letter to the college in pretty handwriting like that of innocent high schoolers:
Dear Sir/Madam,

I'm a 17-year-old Form Four student at Starehe Boys' Centre, and I'd like to join your college next year. I'd be grateful if you sent me info about the IT course you offer and any available scholarships.

Yours faithfully,

John Thuita Maina.
Perhaps because I never mailed a copy of the letter, which I've edited for clarity, I can't remember hearing from the college. And I ended up reporting back to Starehe the following year to pursue an IT diploma in the institute division.

Studying in the institute turned out to be an enriching experience. Not only did I learn valuable computer skills like programming and web design, I also explored my interests in music and public speaking.

Looking back, I'm glad I reported back to Starehe because if there's one thing I've learnt about life, it's that we can really be exploited if we become desperate to get something - be it a job, money or a relationship.

Rise From the Flood

My brothers and I weren't lucky to be raised in such a home. Not that our parents were bad or something. In fact, they were the best we could ever have wished for. It's just that they had humble occupations.

We cooked with firewood and lived in wooden houses that began leaking as the years wore on. One rainy night in 2015, Symo, my kid brother, took a picture of my flooded room; it resembled a river.

And the pit latrine? Oh my! Should I even talk about it? Well, it filled with water during the rainy seasons, making solid waste float to the top. Seeing the waste made eating less exciting.

I think Paddy was the first one to realize how miserable our home was due to the exposure he got when taking a gap year in Australia. And that's probably why he worked so hard in his university studies.

Even after graduating, he kept working hard, this time at establishing himself in corporate leadership. He succeeded in his efforts, and had a brick mansion built at home. Our late Mum was proud of living in the mansion.
