Here's me holding Ben Carson's Think Big.

When I was a first-year student at JKUAT in 2007, I bought Ben Carson's "Think Big". I learnt some valuable tips from it, like walking around with a happy face, expecting good things to happen.

Oh, I also loved the picture of Ben Carson on the front cover. The way he held books confidently in that picture was something I admired, obviously because I have always been an avid reader.

Unhappily, I misplaced the book when I messed up in 2008. As the years wore on, I started yearning to re-read it, perhaps because I wanted to savor its wisdom again.

One night in 2018, I dreamt buying another copy of the book, only to find the one I misplaced the following day. It was among the books Dad brought home from his office in Nairobi.

Lessons From the White-Supporter Tree

We had a white-supporter tree on our compound that produced oodles of fruits. Before my brother Bob had it uprooted after it dried up, it taught me two lessons I will never forget.

The first is that all great achievements take time. You see, the white-supporter tree didn't grow in a day, in a week, or even in a year. It took several years during which it developed deep roots.

From that lesson, I learnt we should be patient in the laying of a firm foundation as we strive to achieve our dreams.

The second lesson is that people turn out better when they go through challenges as they strive to achieve their dreams. I gleaned that lesson from the way white-supporter fruits ripened.

When we plucked the fruits and kept them somewhere to ripen, they would become so wizened that one farmhand was afraid of having diarrhoea if he ate more than a few.

But when we let the fruits stay on the tree where they were exposed to heat, cold and wind, they would ripen nicely and taste sweet. What a lesson!
