I vividly remember the evening I had my first guilt attack. It was in 2009 when I was dropping out of JKUAT, a local university where I had been pursuing an engineering degree.

That evening, it's like I was at war with myself. And what had I done to deserve the attack? Maybe it's because of the way I had gone astray the previous year. Or maybe my soul was just sick.

Anyway, I met an acquaintance of mine called Sammy Murong'a as I was doing something in the university that evening. He took me for a walk and shared some wisdom with me, perhaps to cheer me up.

Though I can't remember a thing he told me, I found his company a much needed escape from the turmoil that was simmering within. He was a living proof that we need a shoulder to lean on in times of difficulty.

Lessons From Colin Powell

When the engineering course I was pursuing at JKUAT became too hot for me to handle, I dropped out in 2009. It was then that I picked up Colin Powell's "My American Journey", one of the wisest things I did during that rocky patch of my life.

Powell is a black American who enrolled at university to study engineering but quickly switched his major to geology. He joined the U.S. military after his graduation and rose through the ranks to become Ronald Reagan's national security advisor.

Since I hadn't also liked engineering, I must have felt in good company to hear him say, "For the life of me, I could not visualize a cone intersecting a plane in space. If this was engineering, the game was over."

As I read the memoir, I could feel how Colin Powell thought clearly and fluently. I also gleaned some valuable lessons that I'd like to share with you.

The first is that no one ever made it to the top without getting into trouble. It has been encouraging to remember that given the way I've irritated people over the years just by being me.

The second is that "great leaders are almost always great simplifiers who cut through arguments, debates and doubts to offer a solution everybody can understand." - a quote Powell used to describe Reagan.

Perhaps the best lessons I learnt were these Colin Powell's rules listed at the end of the memoir:
  1. It ain't as bad as you think. It will look better in the morning.
  2. Get mad, then get over it.
  3. Avoid having your ego so close to your position that when your position falls, your ego goes with it.
  4. It can be done!
  5. Be careful what you choose. You may get it.
  6. Don't let adverse facts stand in the way of a good decision.
  7. You can't make someone else's choices. You shouldn't let someone else make yours.
  8. Check small things.
  9. Share credit.
  10. Remain calm. Be kind.
  11. Have a vision. Be demanding.
  12. Don't take counsel of your fears and naysayers.
  13. Perpetual optimism is a force multiplier.
It appears Rule No. 1 can help me rise above the guilt that sometimes overpowers me when I remember something stupid I did. So I will keep it in mind, and the other rules as well.
