Cultivating Inner Peace

In 2008 when I was on holiday from JKUAT where I was pursuing an engineering degree, I re-read Bill Clinton's memoir in which I came across the following passage that Bill Clinton quoted from Carl Sandburg's The People, Yes:
Tell him to be alone often and get at himself
and above all tell himself no lie about himself.
...
Tell him solitude is creative if he is strong
and the final decisions are made in silent rooms.
...
He will be lonely enough
to have time for the work
he knows as his own.
That passage inspired me to set aside time for solitude. So when I reported back to JKUAT in May 2008 for my second year, I spent much time alone, sometimes in my room, sometimes in the fields. But I can't remember if I enjoyed the solitude.

What I know for sure is that in the years that followed, I often lacked the inner resources to enjoy solitude. Feeling bitter, guilty and insecure made me long for other people's company.

Not all my moments of solitude have been burdensome though. On some evenings in 2016 when I went walking for instance, I enjoyed my own company so much that I would walk on and on.

Because those moments of excitement have come to me sporadically, I want to cultivate an inner peace that will make me enjoy solitude each passing moment, whether alone in my room or out there on the streets walking.

Surprisingly, I have the solutions to inner peace: being grateful, thinking positively, becoming optimistic, associating with positive people, not taking anything personally and putting everything in God's hands.

Realizing I have had the solutions to inner peace makes me agree with whoever said, "You are braver than you believe, stronger than you seem, and smarter than you think."

Now that I have unlocked the solutions to inner peace, putting them into practice is where the rubber meets the road. I will strive to apply them so that I have inner peace each passing moment. So help me God.

Delight in Simple Things

Even though I have told the story over and over again on this blog, I don't think I will ever tire of retelling it in fresh words. And that's how I went astray at JKUAT in 2008 when I was in my second year. I just stopped attending classes and hung around the university without communicating with my family.

One day, JKUAT students went on strike and caused much damage which led to the closure of the university. All students were ordered to vacate their hostels. As for me, I slept in the open air like a wild animal. The following day, I went to Nairobi City and stayed in two or three different places without bathing and changing clothes.

Several days later when JKUAT was reopened and I had to go back, I boarded a matatu, only to find myself fearing that my fellow passengers could criticize me for smelling bad now that I hadn't bathed and changed clothes for some days. Fortunately, none of them did.

Soon, we began sitting for our final semester exams. Because I hadn't been attending classes, I was clueless about how to answer questions. I therefore left most of my answers blank without a care in the world. Needless to say, I flunked the exams.

When we broke for a short holiday after finishing exams, I spent much of my time at a national library in Nairobi City. How I loved being in the library! It was like my refuge because I liked reading books and magazines that were there.

Then when we reported back to JKUAT after that short holiday, I had nowhere to stay since I didn't have money to pay fees. So I again slept in the open air like a wild animal. Eventually, university authorities found me out, took me to a police cell and then admitted me to hospital.

Those experiences demoralized me. By the time I was getting discharged from hospital, I had lost my zest for living. I would spend my days just lazing around, not even summoning the energy to shower, clean my room and wash my clothes. That made me smell bad.

When my brother Paddy sensed I was wearing a smelly sweater one evening, he ordered me to remove it, which I did. But I seem not to have looked after myself because two years later, Paddy caught sight of deep cracks in my heels. This time, he didn't order me to do anything. He just sympathized with me.

With time, I reclaimed myself from apathy and indifference by taking delight in simple things like bathing, brushing my teeth and doing the things I love, especially reading, writing, walking and listening to music. Life has now become an enjoyable experience for me, at least most of the time.

My beloved reader, I urge you to also take delight in simple things. Bathe, brush your teeth, make your bed, go for walks and engage in a hobby. Simple though such tasks are, they make a big difference in the quality of our lives. That's all I am saying.

Bible Quote

"Always be full of joy in the Lord; I say it again, rejoice! Let everyone see that you are unselfish and considerate in all you do... Don't worry about anything; instead pray about everything; tell God your needs and don't forget to thank Him for His answers. If you do this, you will experience God's peace, which is far more wonderful than the human mind can understand."
