One day when I was going to All Saints' Cathedral Nairobi in 2008, I saw several dogs barking so menacingly at a timid dog that they appeared ready to maul it to death. Curious to see whether they would do so, I paused to watch the scene.
Guess what happened? The timid dog stood still till the charging dogs got tired of their barking and melted away one by one.
This world is full of bullies if that incident was anything to go by. I know humans bully others to get a feeling of superiority, but why do animals do so?

With permission, I've extracted this picture-quote from Insbright. All rights reserved worldwide. Last Saturday, my eldest brother Joe Kagigite invited his friends home. I went to greet them when they took their seats in the house. They turned out to be a gregarious lot, and I learnt they were former workmates of Joe.
Before they began feasting on the food that had been prepared for them, Alice, Joe's wife, asked me to say grace. I prayed, "God, for what we are about to receive, make us truly thankful. Amen."
After I was done praying, one of the visitors joked about the shortness of my prayer. The joke had us shrieking with laughter, setting a friendly tone for the conversations we had.
Joe reminisced about our boyhood years when our farm was brimming with oranges. I told them I sold some of the oranges and then held my tongue when a feeling of self-consciousness swept over me.
At around 11:00 a.m., a more gregarious visitor joined us. He enlivened our conversations with his hearty laughter and engaging discussions, like how some Kenyan tribes are unique.
Towards the end of our conversations, the visitors went to their cars and came back with cartons of foodstuffs. When Mum thanked them, I joked that was relief food. One of the visitors giggled at my joke and then handed my parents wads of money enclosed in envelopes.
Of course my parents were grateful for what the visitors had given them. Mum in particular encouraged them to maintain their spirit of friendship, and then implored them to come home more often.
After the visitors left, I thought about the value of friendship and realized that true friends - the ones who bring out the best in us - increase our joy and decreases our sorrow.
